How much sweating is considered normal?
Now the question comes to mind that how do we know we are sweating normally? Approximately, 3 percent of the population suffers from a common disorder known as hyperhidrosis or in simple terms, excessive sweating. Dermatologists say that there is no clinical criterion as to how much sweating is too much sweating.
There are two types of hyperhidrosis you may categorize yourself in which category you fit.
Secondary generalized hyperhidrosis
This generally develops in adulthood. It is excess perspiration that occurs due to some other underlying condition such as pregnancy, menopause, diabetes or heart conditions. Some may experience excess perspiration due to certain medications. Part or complete body may be affected.
Primary focal hyperhidrosis
This kind of sweating affects specific body parts such as forehead, armpits, hands, and feet. People suffering from this type of hyperhidrosis mostly inherit this condition. Primary focal hyperhidrosis does not cause excessive sweating during sleep, unlike secondary generalized hyperhidrosis.

Why there is excessive sweating under my armpits?
Many people notice excessive sweating under their armpits. This condition is known as axillary hyperhidrosis. The foul smell that it produces can add insult to injury that may put additional stress on you. As per International Hyperhidrosis Society, there are active sweat glands in the armpits known as apocrine glands. These sweat glands release thicker fluid as compared to sweat occurring in other parts of your body. When this thick sweat comes in contact with bacteria on the skin of your arms, it causes foul smell.
While most of the people don’t consider it problematic, others might feel that they need some remedy. The solutions include:
- Using disposable garment shields or fabric liners
- Wearing sweat-proof shirts
- Using antiperspirants (aluminium chloride) sprays that clog the pores and prevent sweating
- Botox injections (botulinum toxin) can treat sweaty armpits and the effect last for 6-10 months
- Anticholinergics medications such as glycopyrrolate and oxybutynin
- Surgical procedure such as liposuction and curettage can permanently remove underarm sweat glands

Some people especially women who workout, experience excessive sweating in the groin area or around the private parts. This condition is known as truncal hyperhidrosis and could be very embarrassing at times. The odor in this area, especially around the vagina occurs due to moisture which creates a breeding environment for bacteria and microbes resulting in pH imbalance.

- Trimming or shaving the pubic area decreases the sweating and odor

Why there is excessive sweating on my hands and feet?
There are cases where sweaty palms of your hands (Palmar hyperhidrosis)and feet (plantar hyperhidrosis) can frustrate you and hinder your day to day activities. Even turning a tap, opening a lid or turning a doorknob can be difficult. For these people, following solutions can work:
- Iontophoresis – It’s a treatment device that passes mild electric current while your hands are submerged in the water. It temporarily blocks the sweat glands.
- Antiperspirants – Like under armpits, these sprays also work for excessive sweating on the feet.
- Botox – The treatment can be costly as well as uncomfortable in some cases. Though it gives relief, it’s not a permanent solution.
- Moisture absorbing socks – People who experience excessive sweating should avoid cotton socks and instead use socks made from fibers that absorb moisture.
